Checker Motors Corporation was an American automaker best known for producing the iconic Checker Marathon, a distinctive taxicab that became synonymous with urban transportation. Established in 1922 by Morris Markin, Checker Motors initially manufactured taxicab bodies before expanding into complete automobile production. The Checker Marathon, introduced in the early 1960s, gained popularity for its spacious interior, durability, and unique design, featuring a boxy shape and a distinctive checkerboard pattern on the grille. While the Marathon was widely used as a taxi, it also became popular among private car owners. Checker Motors faced financial challenges and ceased automobile production in 1982. Despite its relatively modest lineup, Checker Motors and its Marathon model left an indelible mark on American automotive history, representing a distinct chapter in urban transportation and serving as an enduring symbol of taxi cabs.
