Merkur was a short-lived automotive brand established by Ford Motor Company in the United States in the mid-1980s. Introduced in 1985, Merkur aimed to bring European performance and sophistication to the American market by importing cars from Ford of Europe’s lineup. The brand’s lineup included models such as the Merkur XR4Ti, a sporty hatchback based on the Ford Sierra, and the Merkur Scorpio, a luxury sedan based on the Ford Granada Scorpio. Despite offering advanced features and capable performance, Merkur struggled to find success in the American market due to factors such as limited brand recognition and strong competition from domestic and foreign automakers. As a result, Merkur was discontinued in 1989 after only a few years of production, leaving behind a small but unique legacy in the history of American automotive imports.
