Chassis Information

Models Offered

Buick Special – Series 40 –
The Series 40 continued as in 1948 production without change until mid-year. Data plates, however, have “49” as their prefix. The second series 1949 Special was continued into 1950 and the 1950 specifications may be found listed under that year.

Buick Super – Series 50 –
The Super shared a new GM “C-body” with the Roadmaster, but on a shorter wheelbase. Featured three chromed Ventiports on each front fender. “Super” detailed in script just above the full-length body/fender molding on the front fenders. New fender-edge taillamps were featured, while rear fender skirts remained a Buick standard. New fender-top parking lamps, harking back to 1941 styling. also appeared. Full wheel trim discs were standard.

Cloth interiors were standard, except for the Model 56C Convertible which was trimmed in leather and leatherette and had a power top, seat and windows as standard equipment. Other standard equipment included cigar lighter, ashtray and automatic choke.

Buick Roadmaster – Series 70 –
The Roadmaster shared the new GM “C-body” with the Super. It used closed quarters in sedan roofs and fastback sedanette styling for coupes. Roadmasters had longer front fenders and four Ventiports per side, with “Roadmaster” in script below and also within bumper guard crossbar centers. Skirted rear wheelhouse openings were standard, as were all features found on the Super Series 50. Interior fabrics were plusher, with a Custom trim option again offered. A new instrument panel was used that contin¬ued Buick’s centered radio grille flanked by operational speakers.

Windshield panels were curved but still had a division bar. The Model 79R Estate Wagon had mahogany veneer panels inside, with leather upholstery and carpeted floors and cargo area, while the Model 76C Convertible was upholstered in leather and had standard power seat and top. The mid-year Model 76R Riviera hardtop was upholstered in leather and cloth and also had standard power windows.

Buick Super Engine: In-line eight-cylinder: overhead valve. Cast iron block. Displacement: 248.0 cubic inches. Bore and stroke: 3-3/32 x 4-1/8 inches. Compression ratio: 6.6:1. Horsepower: 115 @ 3600 R.P.M. Torque: 206 @ 2000 R.P.M. Five main bearings. Mechanical valve lifters. Carburetor: Stromberg AAV-167 number 380225 or Carter 608 or 663 two-barrel.

Buick Roadmaster Engine: In-line eight cylinder: Overhead valve. Cast iron block. Displacement: 320.2 cubic inches. Bore and stroke: 3-7/16 x 4-4/16. Compression ratio: 6.9:1. Horsepower: 150 @ 3600 R.P.M. Torque: 280 @ 2000 R.P.M. Five main bearings. Mechanical valve lifters. Carburetor: Stromberg AAV-267 #380226 and Carter 609 or 664.
