Rambler, a Chicago-based bicycle brand, developed its first gasoline car in 1897.  The company, founded by Thomas and Charles Jeffery, started manufacturing the Rambler in 1900. The Rambler brand continued until 1914 when the company turned its focus to the “Jeffery.”

In 1916 Charles Jeffery retired and sold the company to Charles Nash.

In 1950, Nash-Kelvinator trademarked the Rambler name. In 1954, Rambler became a division of American Motors Corporation following a merger with Nash and Hudson. The last Rambler model produced by AMC was in 1969. AMC dropped the Rambler brand name in 1970, consolidating its models under the AMC brand.
